Len Collins

Len Collins was injured on the 15 August 1940 at 16 Oldknow Road, Small Heath. We have no records to confirm this was a fatal injury.

General Hospital West Midlands Police Records Raid 3 – 15th/16th August 1940 Air Raid message Yellow 12.6.a.m. Purple 12.8 a.m. Air Raid warning Red was received at 1.37 a.m. and White at 3.15 a.m. Approximately 85 High Explosive bombs (including 6 unexploded) and a good number of I. Bs were dropped in Stetchford, Bordesley Green, Little Bromwich, Alum Rock, Erdington and Acocks Green districts. The known casualties are 11 persons fatally injured and 14 injured. Previous to the Red warning incendiary bombs had fallen in the Stetchford area at 12.30 a.m. and many fires started, and at 12.59 a.m. the first H. E. was reported. Complaints were made by members of the public of the delay in sounding the sirens. Approximately 140 premises and houses were damaged, including a hospital and a nurses' home and the Singer Motor Company on the Coventry Road. Members of the public did good work in assisting the police and wardens to deal with the large number of incendiary bombs
